Baddi Royale II Recap

Badmintology went (even more) international as we extend our reach into California as participants flew in to join us over the weekend at Cambie Secondary for BaddiRoyale 2, the final tournament of season 2.

279 participants (279! Thank you!) came and hopefully 279 left happy. With more prizes than ever before, Badmintology was in a giving mood as we handed out Yonex shirts and a digital camera. Congratulations to lucky winner Jodie Shum for her new Canon Powershot digital camera and Jacky Wong and Lisa Doan for their Yonex shirts. Now Lisa does not have to wear David Dryden’s jersey when she competes.

On to the tournament and some of the matches I want to high light:

Good things happen to those with patience as David Dryden finally won a title this season in the last event of the year taking Red Shell Open Mens Double with Jens Berg beating the U-14 provincial champion (2010) James Ho and his partner Melvin Tok in straight sets. Dryden and Jens fought off a barrage of attacks, diving and scrambling to get shots back to the chagrin of the row of mothers. For their efforts, each received a trophy, a winner’s t-shirt, and a prize.

While one provincial champion faltered, another one rose as Nathan Choi showed us why he was the BC U19 Boys Double champion as he teamed up with Hugh Leung to easily take the Blue Shell Mens Double crown. After surviving a scare from the top rank team of Mike Nguyen and Henry Quan in the semi-finals, they went on to cruise in the finals against Alan Wilson and Jyh-Liang Yeh.

Continuing with the linking theme, Hugh Leung would double crown this tournament as he took home the Blue Shell Mens Singles title as well defeating yours truly in straight sets. This completes Hugh’s victory in all three Blue Shell events during the season – the first for all male players.

While I did not win a title, my mix partner Cynthia To certainly did as she and Veronica Lo finally took home the Red Shell Open Women Doubles title in three sets. Great job gals!

In Blue Shell Women Singles, Rong Rong Chen defeated all opponents to take home first place. Although the match of the night between Elisha Liu and Rong Rong did not occur due to injury, we were treated to some graceful badminton as Rong Rong won her final match against runner up Joanna Che 21-10, 21-15,

Finally, perhaps the most entertaining match of the tournament was the Blue Shell Mix Doubles as Mickey Chow and Veronica Yeung won in a nail biting three set match against scratch pairing Vincent Teo and Joanna Che. With the help of a net roll service receive, Mickey and Veronica tied the game in the third set 20-20 and won the last set 22-20. Exciting stuff!

All results can be found on Search for Badmintology as the club and you will find us.

Next up is the team tournament at Canadian International Badminton Club in Surrey on May 14th to 15th. Teams will be contacted and invited to join the exclusive tournament. If you are someone that played two of our tournaments and are looking to join a team, please contact us and we might be able to make something happen!

Thanks everyone for playing! We will be back in Season 3 bigger and better! =)
