The first ever Badmintology Vancouver tournament turned out to be a great success. Summer Fiesta Open held at Cambie Secondary gathered more than 200 participants across four age groups for three days of badminton fun.
It started off with a mini flood that reduced eleven courts into eight. This caused a little drama with the scheduling. Thank you to the 35+ singles participants that were so understanding!
Friday’s action was highlighted by the Open Mix Doubles where battle cries spawned across the gym. As the tournament progressed, the screams got louder and more frequent. Shrieks came with smashes, clears, drops, and just about anything.
Saturday displayed all age categories from U-16 through to the 35+. Raymond Tsoi and Jessica Kwok came, saw, and conquered, winning two of two in the event they entered. Chris Lee deserves heroic mention as he earned two golds and one silver all in a day’s work. Sunday saw the running of the 35 team draw that is 29ALL Open Men’s Doubles.
The most captivating image of the day was the pair of Willis Kwee and Arthur Chiu and their matching Avril Lavigne neon pink skulls leg warmers and vibrant colored game shirts. Bryan Yee set the standard for the men’s field in 29ALL with his mix and doubles victories. The final matches of the tournament belonged to 29-ALL Open Womens Doubles Finals and Consolation Finals. The two matches were filled with body smashes and apologies. In the end, Bowie Tam became the forth player of the tournament to go two for two as she took the Women Doubles crown with a convincing smash into Rosalynn Chong.
While no BaddiBoomers manage to win more than one event, Waina Ho came close with a victory in Open WD and a second place in Open MxD. A special shout out goes to Mr. Yonex aka Jayson Shum of Tad’s Sporting Goods for his performance in achieving second place in the BB Open MS.
Overall, fourteen teams have already signed up and the team pursuit to the championship is underway. Battledore Family leads in size but Baddiholics leads in points. With only sixteen teams that can qualify for the team championship, the race will surely heat up!
