Season 5 began bigger and better with the first tournament of the year at ClearOne Badminton Centre. Rolling out every event, the tournament featured 224 players playing over three different skill level.
Let’s start our recap on the elusive Blue Shell womens singles, an event that shows up once in a Blue moon. This time, we had 4 strong participants in a tightly contested round robin. Top junior national players Christie Choy came out victorious with wins across the board with her doubles partner Jenna Wong coming in 2nd. Rounding out the competition is Chelsey Yang and Veronica Yeung with solid three set battles to keep the competition up. Hopefully, this is the start to a bigger womens singles draw!
In Red Shell womens singles, we had another round robin of 4. Cathy Chen was a clear winner beating out everyone to win the title. Long time Red Shell player Jodie Shum follows closely in 2nd with a three set lost against Cathy. Green Shell player Diana Wong stepped up to Red Shell and had a spirited outing rounding out the 4.
In Green Shell women singles, we have our first promotion as Camellia Peng won in straight sets over Saira Butter. She would also team up with Carol Lo to win Green Shell women doubles. Welcome to Red Shell Camellia and Carol!
Our first mini-upset came in Blue Shell Men Singles as ageless wonder Vincent Teo won the event beating number 1 seed Luke Kuroko in two sets. However, the match of the event belonged to David Dryden vs. Jason Wong. This heated match between coach and student went three sets with lots of screams and passion that can be heard across the gym. Jason Wong proved that the student might have surpassed the master with a third set win over Dryden 22-20.
Once again, Austin Doong claimed the Red Mens Singles title with a win over Tommy Li. Chun Kei Luk would round out the top 3 with a win over Anthony Lee in the 16 player draw. Austin Doong would also win the Red Mix Doubles title with Polly Li over Andrew Li and Isabelle Tang. Looks like Austin is almost ready for to jump into Blue Shell.
Perhaps one of the more shocking results was the defeat of Isabelle Tang and Chelsey Yang in the Red Shell women doubles. The number 1 seeds and winners of multiple Red Shell doubles title pair lost first round to Cheryl Lau and Jodie Shum. The winner would eventually be a blast from the past as Brenda Ng and Michelle Sz came out of tournament hiatus to show the youngster that they still got it, beating out Angie Hui and Brianna Tang in the finals.
Finally, it was looking like upset city as 2nd seeds Mike Nguyen/Crystal Chow and 3rd seed Samuel Wadsworth/Daisy Lee all fell before they reached the semi-finals in the Blue Shell Mix Doubles. Luckily, the remaining seeds Chris Chung/Rosalynn and Aaron To/Cynthia To picked up the slack as they battled it out in the finals with Chris and Rosalynn taken home another title.
Congratulations to all winners!!

We just want to remind everyone that there are a few changes this season. For starters, we will shorten the amount of tournaments to 4, therefore, plan your tournaments wisely in order to play in the team tournament. Every participant must play two tournaments, barring out of town players or other extraordinary circumstances. This year, we also do not require anyone to sign up under a team name as everyone will be free to form their own team with players that played two or more of the tournaments in the season. This offers further flexibility for all teams in the event of injuries and schedule conflicts.
Thanks everyone and hope to see you soon!
